Acme Lowcountry Kitchen
This place is outstanding. They specialize in fresh, locally sourced seafood served up in a laid back atmosphere. Their nightly specials are always a hit and the variety of shrimp and grit dishes they offer will not disappoint. They have been recognized for their use of locally sourced and sustainable seafood (which means you will not be eating previously frozen shrimp that have been imported from Asia.) Truly, this place is my personal favorite, hands down. You can find them at: 31 JC Long Blvd, Isle of Palms, SC 29451 |
Long Island Cafe
This is our other regular go-to. It's located on Palm Blvd right next door to the Harris Teeter. It's run by locals, Christiana and Ravi, and they make some of the most amazing seafood you'll find on this island. In fact, I have decided that their She-Crab soup is the best you'll find in Charleston! Also, the Pan-Fried Flounder is a must as are the crab cakes! Seriously, soooo good. It's fairly small and fills up every night so reservation are definitely recommended. Long Island Cafe can be reached at 843-886-8809. |
Saltworks Dockside Deli
These folks serve up awesome burgers, sandwiches, salads and wraps. My favorite is their breakfast. Fast, cheap and awesome. Try the breakfast wrap....as far as I can tell they take every breakfast item available and wrap a tortilla around it!! Located inside the Isle of Palms Marina Store on 41st avenue. Best part is getting to sit outside at the marina and enjoy your meal! |
The Obstinate Daughter
I'm not going to sugarcoat it, I tried to back out of going here at first because their menu lists some things that I personally don't like, and I was skeptical. HEAR ME NOW: Do not make that mistake. On a dozen occasions, they fed me things I thought I hated, yet they made me LOVE it. That's an amazing feat in my book. They have a raw bar, fresh local seafood, amazing pasta and gourmet pizza. Plus, their Shrimp Roll (think Lobster Roll) is something I have to eat weekly. You can (and must) find them at 2063 Middle St, Sullivan's Island, SC 29482 |
Happy Hour, Nightlife and Sunsets
If you're looking to have an adult beverage and unwind a little bit on your vacation, there's a seemingly endless amount of places to do so. There's also a wide variety to choose from, so I put together a list of some of our favorites.

The Windjammer This is The Dinghy's older brother and it's a beachfront bar that has some fairly large regional acts pass through. When that happens, it gets crowded and loud! They have volleyball courts out back, pool tables inside and another "bar food" menu. There is a large back porch that sits right on the beach and it gets pretty crowded on a hot summer day. This place has been an island staple since before Hurricane Hugo and is another favorite of the locals.
Islander 71 This place has a little bit of everything. It's located on the intracoastal waterway at the Isle of Palms Marina on 41st avenue. It has a rooftop bar for sunset views and a great seafood menu. They also have huge windows for some awesome ICW views. My favorite thing about the outside area is watching people trying to trailer their boats after spending a long day out on the water. It can be quite a show at times...
The Boathouse at Breach Inlet
This is a great restaurant but it also has a rooftop bar with perfect Westward views for every sunset. It sits right above the inlet overlooking dolphins, fisherman and a tiny marina. The Ben Sawyer Bridge and the Cooper River Bridge can be seen in the distance. The BEST sunsets I have seen have been from this spot. A cold cocktail and the Crab Fritters in Green Tabasco Cream only sweeten the deal. It's a mostly quiet/mellow spot but they do occasionally have an acoustic guitarist playing. It can be found on the south end of the island right on the inlet separating Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island. |
The Dinghy
This is a favorite spot for the locals and often gets loud. They serve everything from Craft Brews to PBR and it's always a good time here. They also have live music just about every night from happy hour until about 9:30. It has a screened in patio, back porch seating and a bar with table seating inside. They also have retro video games and an old school Nintendo set up to a television. The beers are cold and the food is good and it's open from lunchtime to late night. It definitely gets loud here. It has a "bar food" type menu with Wings, burgers, fried seafood, salads and sandwiches. You can find it in the business district on Front Beach across from the Windjammer. Sullivan's Island Business District Rather than detail every place to have a drink on SI, I'll just throw them all together. First and foremost, they all get super crowded in the summer with a healthy mix of locals and tourists. First up is Mex 1 Coastal Cantina. It has some great fish tacos and margaritas, a large bar, large front porch and it broadcasts surf videos non-stop. Across the street is Poe's Tavern. They have amazing burgers, a large beer selection and it is pretty much always jam-packed. Always. Then there's Dunleavy's Irish Pub, my personal favorite. It's a true Irish pub with the walls covered in license plates and pictures and beer cans! They've been around for a lot longer than I have and will probably be there well after I'm gone!
